Are You Interested in a Serious Business or Fun Part

Posted on 17 December 2007 by Linda Joseph

What is your reason for starting an online business?

Are you looking to change careers and work from your home or
are you just looking to have some fun and maybe earn a little
extra cash?

This is a question that can really save you a lot of stress and
frustration but can be hard to answer. Here is a short survey
that might help you answer this question.

Circle Y for Yes and N for No…

1. Do you find you are too busy with other things to get anything done with your online business?

Y = 0 / N = 1

2. Do you spend more time reading emails or chatting in forums than actually doing work?

Y = 0 / N = 1

3. Have you set realistic goals and do you track your progress towards them?

Y = 1 / N = 0

4. Have you created a budget and do you track income and expenses?

Y = 1 / N = 0

5. Do you test and track your websites and promotions?

Y = 1 / N = 0

Now add up your score…

2 or Less = Hobby

3 or More = Business

Help… I Scored 2 or Less?

First of all you need to understand that this is just a quick
survey and is not absolutely perfect but if you have scored a 2
or less then you really need to ask yourself “why?”

Think of all your excuses for the answers to each question… are
they something that if you really looked at this as a business
you would honestly not take seriously.

The good news is if it is just a hobby, then please have fun with
it!  (I’m serious!  Enjoy!  That is actually part of my strategy next year!)
But if you are wanting to build a business and having a hard time getting started hang in there. After the holidays I am going to help you start to define some of your goals and then build the plans to achieve your goals.

Internet Business: Why Are You Doing This?

Posted on 14 December 2007 by Linda Joseph

Before you can start in any new business however, there are
three very important steps that you need to take…

1. Understand Why You Are Doing This?

You need to stop right now from wanting to rush into starting a business and take a step back for a moment to try and understand the big picture.

Do you want…

1. To help a current business expand
2. To make some extra cash on the side
3. To be able to quit your job and work for yourself
4. To just have fun
5. You fill in the blank here

2. Know What You Want to Accomplish?
What is Your Goal?

You may think this is the same as the first question, but it really is not. Why you are doing something is not the same as what you want to accomplish by doing it.

This question takes the first one to a deeper level because it makes you look at it as an attainable goal, rather than a far off dream.

If your answer is “to make some extra cash”, then you probably have a set amount of cash you want to make. Perhaps it is to help pay off a debt or to afford a new vehicle.

Whatever the reason, now is the time to figure that out.
Do not shrug this off! It is so incredibly important and so often overlooked. I guarantee the people that are very successful online have all answered this question.

This comes down to work ethic, you need to take the time to build your solid
foundation and then once that is established, everything else
will fall into place.

3. Make a Commitment

Now for the hard part!

Writing out why you are doing this and what you want to
accomplish is easy. Anyone can take a few minutes and write
down a bunch of simple words, but what is going to make the
difference from making these just a bunch of words to making
them an actual goal is that you need to make a commitment to
what you wrote down.

This is going to take hard work on your part and that means
that you are going to need to commit time to this every day.

How much time?

That depends on how fast you want to succeed, but I
recommend that you spend at least 2 hours a day on this for at
least the next 6 months if you want to see any measurable
results. So in order to do that you are going to have to clear
your schedule to allow for 2 hours a day to be spent on your
new business.

That might mean that you have to drop a favorite pastime for
awhile or stop watching a favorite television show. Maybe it
means that you will have to stay up a little later every night.
Whatever it is, you need to decide now and make a commitment
that you are going to dedicate that time to growing your

The best way to do this is to map out your week ahead of time.
This is one of the reasons I love the Franklin Covey day planner
systems, because they are based around the principal of putting
first things first. That means you need to look at your schedule
and plan ahead of time when you are going to accomplish your
important tasks.

By looking at your week, you will start to see lots of
opportunities that you could be doing something more
productive. Once you identify your areas, you can then plan
those times for working on your business.

My favorite resource for helping with my online business is the
extremely powerful solution PortalFeeder. I have been a
