WordPress 3.2 – Issues – Problems

There have been a number of problems with the WordPress 3.2 release.  If you haven’t upgraded yet, you might want to wait a few weeks.

I wasn’t aware of the many issues until I upgraded one of my blogs.  As I tried to find the answer to my problem I found a myriad of issues other users were experiencing.

My first sign of trouble after the upgrade was the loss of the entire left sidebar!  You know the one that has all the navigation links you need to do anything in your blog?

It was gone! Vanished!  Then began the long, frustrating search for an answer. It was close to two hours of reading through the forum list of problems before I got any hint of what the problem might be.

The first word of advice was to make sure that I had the right level of php and mySQL on my server before doing anything else.  It took an hour on chat to work on this.  I went to the CPanel and my PHP seemed to be down level.  However the chat with the support desk led me to add some code to the .htaccess file.

Didn’t change a thing.  Still my left navigation in the WordPress dashboard.

Back to more forum posts.  Someone recommends that plugin abc might cause this problem. I didn’t have this particular plugin,  but I could check my plugins.

Wait!  I can’t see my plugin link so how do I check plugins? Here is what I did.

  1. Went to the blog
  2. In the grey navigation bar at the top, I could add a plugin!
    (Here was my back door!)
  3. Picked some random plugin to add.  When I got to the page where I could activate the plugin or go to the plugin page, I clicked ‘Go to Plugin Page.”
  4. I started deactivating one plugin at a time – this was too painful and I didn’t know if a plugin was the issue.
  5. I deactivated all the plugins and my navigation appeared!  Now I knew a plugin was the culprit!
  6. I narrowed it down to one plugin.  It was a paid plugin and when I went to the support desk they had the new version ready to download.

After all the problems I have seen in the forums and on blogs, I would recommend that you wait till the plugins are updated to work with this new version of WordPress.
