Create a Secure Wi-Fi Connection

Posted on 21 December 2012 by Linda Joseph

How to be secure on a public network…

I travel a lot and am always concerned on the number of public networks I find myself on.  I have some basic rules about using public wi-fi networks:

  1. Never buy anthing with a credit card
  2. Never log into a banking institution
  3. Never enter password on unsecure sites

These rules do pose some difficulty since I am running my business while traveling.  However I came across a solution: using a VPN (virtual private network).

After a lot of research, I am going with HotSpot Shield by Anchor Free.

  • They offer a free solution (you just have to deal with ads)
  • They offer a very reasonable paid version (just $30/year)
  • It is easy to install and use
  • I can use it on my laptop, Android Samsung Galaxy III and my Samsung tablet!

Here are a few reviews:

PC World:  4 out of 5 stars; read the review here:

Feeling safe when you connect to a hot spot at cafe, airport, or some other public location? You shouldn’t. There are plenty of potential dangers lurking there, including nearby hackers who may try to sniff your packets, or figure out other ways to snoop at what you’re doing online. Particularly dangerous is if you visit any Web sites and type in your user name and password–they could be hijacked.

Bear a few things in mind about Hotspot Shield. When you install it, make sure to decline the extra toolbars. They’re annoying, and Hotspot Shield works fine without it. And if you don’t want your home page and search engine to be changed, uncheck those options as well.

Dave Taylor also gave it a good review:

Easy to download and install, you can get their client app for either Mac or Windows. There are two versions: Hotspot Shield, which includes a pop-up advert that you might or might not find annoying (I’ll show you the ad in a second) or Hotspot Shield Elite, which removes the ad but has a fee associated with it. In both cases, the app includes the ability to block know malware sites, but in addition to removing the advertisement, the Elite version also blocks phishing sites and a faster backend server network (VPN requires software on both your computer and a server somewhere on the Internet, and encrypts the data between the two).

Livescribe and Evernote

Posted on 19 December 2012 by Linda Joseph

I am quickly becoming an Evernote ambassador! (Not a designated one.)

I love Evernote!  Developing a strategy and system is critical for making the most efficient use of this service.  If I have time, I will expound on that a bit more but now I want to talk about Livescribe.

Livescribe now has a pen that has the ability to connect via wi-fi to Evernote.  Is that awesome or what?

Here is some of the info on this product:

 Livescribe 4GB Sky Wifi Smartpen

Record everything you hear, say and write, and link audio recordings directly to notes with the Sky wifi Smartpen from Livescribe, featuring 4 GB of memory to record 400 hours of audio and thousands of pages of notes, diagrams and drawings1. Tap anywhere on a page to replay audio from that exact moment, and wirelessly sync notes and audio to your free Evernote account. Replay, search and share your interactive notes, any time and anywhere from PC, Mac, iOS or Android devices2.

Smartpens Remember So You Don’t Have To

Record everything you write and hear together or separately. Tap anywhere on your notes to replay the audio from that moment in time.

Livescribe Dot Paper

Dot paper captures everything your smartpen writes.

Any Time, Anywhere Access To Your Notes

Quickly search, share and replay your lectures, meetings and ideas any time on nearly any device. The Sky wifi smartpen is the perfect companion to your tablet, laptop and smartphone.

4 GB of Memory for Recordings and Notes

When digitizing your notes and audio, you’ll need storage space. A 4GB smartpen can hold over 400 hours of audio and thousands of pages of notes.

Livescribe Dot Paper

Livescribe dot paper uses standard paper printed with a unique pattern of tiny microdots. This tiny pattern acts like a map for your smartpen, allowing it to capture the exact location of everything it writes or draws on dot paper.

Livescribe smartpens only work with Livescribe dot paper. Choose from a variety of paper types, bindings, and sizes at competitive prices: blank, lined, or grid paper in spiral-bound notebooks, hard-bound journals, notepads, and even sticky notes. Find the paper that’s right for you.

Additional Applications

Quick Record: Record audio without using dot paper with just a press of a button.

Quick Calculations: Write an addition, subtraction, multiplication or division problem on dot paper and get the answer on your smartpen screen.

System Utilities: Additional system utilities include multiple language support, time, date, storage info, right- and left-hand support and battery charge.

What’s in the Box?

4GB Sky wifi smartpen, Free Livescribe edition of Evernote with 500MB of additional upload capacity for smartpen notes and audio, Sky wifi smartpen Basics Guide, starter dot paper notebook (50 sheets), Micro USB cable, 2 ink cartridges, 2 smartpen caps.

I love to write down ideas; make graphic representations or mind maps and now they will show up in my Evernote account.  (Which by the way, is synced to my laptop, desktop, tablet and phone!)

Check it out!  I know it will make me more efficient!

Linda
