Add an Application to Facebook

3 Reasons Why I Hate Facebook…

Actually there are several reasons why I extremely dislike Facebook but I am only going to rant on a few.

How I got to this point…

A friend asked me how to get an easy to remember web address for their profile page. (I love easy questions that make me look like as expert!)

I replied that it was easy:
  1. Go to the bottom of your home page and click on “Applications”
  2. Search for the application ‘Memorable Web Addresses for Profiles, Pages and Groups”
  3. Add the application
  4. Go back to your home page and the link should be on the left column under your picture and before ‘Chat with friends’

WAIT – Facebook has removed the Application button at the bottom of you home page!
Where have they put it? I am serious, I would love to know!

I have looked high and low and I cannot find it.

Yes, I found a way to add applications.
  1. Log into your Facebook account and type ‘Applications Directory’ into the search bar at the top
  2. In the left column, look for ‘Applications’ and click
  3. In the application search area type in ‘Memorable Web Addresses’ and the top result should be ‘Memorable Web Addresses for Profile, Page or Group.’
(The icon is a white arrow to the right in a green box.)
  4. Click on the ‘View Application’
  5. In the left column, click on the link: ‘Add to my Page’
  6. Go back to your home page and the link should be on the left column under your picture and before ‘Chat with friends’
  7. Click on the link and follow the instructions

I haven’t forgotten – 3 reasons why I hate Facebook
  1. Facebook randomly changes/moves features and functions. In fairness to them, I’m sure they aren’t random changes. But to the casual observer it makes no sense to make it more difficult to add applications.
  2. Facebook is not intuitive. I must admit that I am a logical person and find it frustrating when it isn’t obvious how to accomplish routine tasks. However it does give me opportunities to create guides for Facebook.
  3. Facebook has a terrible ‘Help’ interface. There was not a solution listed to the search query: “Add application”. The lack of information indicates to me that I may just be missing the obvious. hhhmmmm

Now, before you attribute this frustration to the fact that I am a baby boomer and therefore deemed incapable of most online tasks, I want you to know I asked both of my teenagers.

As you know, kids today know everything about the Internet. I asked both of them how to add an application. Their immediate response was a look of ‘Mom, don’t you know how to do anything.’ Ten minutes later both left my side after admitting they didn’t know.
I just smiled.
