Why Pinterest

Posted on 21 February 2012 by Linda Joseph

Why Haven’t I Heard of Pinterest?

Pinterest came out of nowhere!  Here are a few great stats about why you need to consider using Pinterest:

  • 30% of the users are ages 35 – 44
  • 90% are women
  • 60% have attended college
  • 70% are in the $25K – $75K i
    ncome bracket
Why Pinterest - stats
As I mentioned in the last post, Pinterest is in the top ten social media sites.  In February it beat out LinkedIn, Tagged, Google +, MySpace and Yelp.
Here are 5 SEO tips mentioned in this article:
  1. Title – Take care in what you name your title
  2. Board Titles – should be keyword focused
  3. Link to your website
  4. Use keywords in description
  5. Always have one nice image on your blog post
This article on Pinterest had a lot of interesting insights which is why I pinned it to one of my boards!
Try using Pinterest today.  If you need an invite, just put your request below. Remember, I need a valid email address in order for Pinterest to send you an invite.

What is Pinterest? Part 1

Posted on 16 February 2012 by Linda Joseph

 PINTEREST –What is Pinterest?

Staying on top of the latest social media sites is a full time job! I am a little leary of jumping

what is pinterest

What is Pinterest

on every new site and wait for it to demonstrate that is has something unique to offer and some ‘staying’ power.

Along comes Pinterest.

Unique – no words – just images

Staying power – it has hit a cord with millions!   (There were about 120, 000 users about a year ago and today there are over 6 millions users!)

What is Pinterest?  Pinterest is nothing more than a virtual bulletin board where you can display and organize all the awesomes images you find while browsing.

Find a great idea for decorating your house – pin it on your  ‘home decorations’ board.
Find some fab shoes for an outfit – pin them on your ‘wish list’ or ‘shoe board’.
Find that dream vacation pic – pin it on your ‘Wish I was There!’ board.

I can tell you that it is addictive!

What is a Pin?

A pin is simply any image/photo/pic you add to your Pinterest account.

You can add a ‘pin’ from a website or from you computer.

A great way to get started is to peruse some of the boards on Pinterest and re-pin images that you like.

Let’s say that you are interested in wreaths. Just enter the term ‘wreath’ in the search on the Pinterest home page and you will find more pictures on a variety of wreaths than you can imagine.  Scroll through and simple click on the images that you like and re-pin them to a relevant board.

You will want to install a ‘Pin It” button on your browser  to make it easy to pin images you find while browsing the web. (Just go to the “Goodies” page and find instructions specific for you browser.)

How to Get Started…  Coming soon..

HTML Help – Most Important Tags

Posted on 12 January 2012 by Linda Joseph

How Do I… HTML Help

I get asked daily about HTML.  I used to teach HTML and wrote a book on HTML.

If you want to learn HTML just pick up a free copy of “Seven Easy Steps to HTML Success“, Free HTML book.

The two most important tags that you need to know are:

  1. The HTML link tag
  2. The HTML image tag

These two tags I use more than all the other tags combined!  I used them when I made web pages and I use them today when I create widgets on my WordPress pages.

HTML TAG – Links

<a href=”url”>anchor text </a>

The “URL” is the link that you want to go to.  This has to start with http://

Here is an example: http://freehtmlbook.com

This is an acceptable URL to put in the link tag.  Make sure that it goes in between the two quotation marks.

The text between <a…> and </a> is called the anchor text.  If you have ever seen blue underlined text that goes to a website when you click on it you have seen anchor text links.

In this case, I want the anchor text link to be:   free HTML book

Here is the code: <a href=”http://freehtmlbook.com”>free HTML Book</a>

Here is what it looks like: free HTML Book

HTML TAG – Images

You will want to insert images into your web page or wordpress blog.  The secret here is that your image must reside on the Internet somewhere.  If it just is on your computer it will not show.

If you do not have hosting then I recommend that you use a free image hosting service like photobucket or flickr.  You can then link to your image and have it appear online.

Here is the HTML help tag: <img src=”url”>

NOTE: There is NO PAIR of tags with the image tag. It is one of the exceptions!

The url of the image has to start with http:// just like it did for the linking tag.

Here is an example of an image tag: <img src=”http://freehtmlbook.com/images/Copy%20of%20S-E-S-T-H-S2.jpg”>
Here is how the browser will interpret this HTML image tag:

Write these two tags down and put them where you can easily access them! Believe me, you will use them all the time!

How to Use Flickr to Host Your Images

How to Use Flickr to Host Your Images

In a previous post I showed you how to use Photobucket to host your images.  If you have your own hosting, you can host your images on your server.  However, there are many times that you need images hosted somewhere else.Using Flickr to host your images for free

If you don’t have web hosting then you need to host images and videos on free image hosting sites. I use both Photobucket and Flickr. For many images, I use Photobucket simply because it is the easiest.

However, if I am hosting images for keyword ranking then I use Flickr.

The video below will show you how to grab a URL for your image from Flickr and embed it on a blog post or on a forum.

Video: How to use Flickr to host your images

If you are using a free hosting service to host you images, figure out which one if easiest for you.  As I mentioned before, I like Photobucket for convenience and Flickr for search results.

Remember to always add an image to your posts and pages!
